Enid Webster – 95 years of age – 3rd City2surf run

Enid Webster

AMONG the nearly 80,000 runners in last week’s iconic City2Surf road race there was at least one standout, particularly to the Cooranbong community.  That was 95-year-old Cooranbong resident Enid Webster.

Ms Webster did not finish the 14 kilometre race first, but she did not finish last. The Avondale Lifestyle Community resident crossed the finish line in three hours and five minutes, almost two-and-a-half hours behind the race winner.

But, 95 years of age, to fellow residents of her retirement village she is an absolute winner. Competing in just her third City to Surf, Ms Webster has proved that age is no barrier to life. Running with four generations of her family, including four great grandchildren, Ms Webster said the event is quite an experience.

Plus, she has plenty of advice for those wanting to emulate her success, particularly for anyone wary of the renowned Heartbreak Hill. The secret to that hill, according to Ms Webster, is to divide it into four sections, and just do one at a time. Keep walking and you eventually reach the top, she said. You must always remember to take a moment to enjoy the beautiful view of Sydney Harbour.

As for her secret training tips, Ms Webster’s advice is simple: walk daily.
